DEPARTMENT OF MARINE MACHINERY OPERATIONS ENGINEERING
The Department of Marine Engineering was established in 2008 and began operations within the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Maritime Sciences in the 2009–2010 academic year with 50 students. The objective of the Marine Engineering Operations Program launched at Yildiz Technical University is to train qualified Marine Engineering Operations Engineers to meet the needs of both Turkey’s and the world’s merchant fleets. Students are also offered the opportunity to pursue a double major with other undergraduate programs at our university. Provided that the course content and credit value are appropriate, students may also take courses from different departments. At least 30% of the courses are taught in English.
The department’s faculty consists of 18 faculty members—including 5 Professors, 10 Associate Professors, and 3 Assistant Professors—along with 8 research assistants, 1 instructor, 3 technicians, and 3 administrative staff members, for a total of 35 personnel.
The most important aspect of the Marine Engineering Program is that a significant portion of the education is practice-oriented. Educational activities are conducted at Yildiz Technical University’s main (Yildiz) campus in Beşiktaş, Istanbul. While uniforms are not mandatory for daily instruction in our department, wearing a uniform in accordance with maritime customs and traditions is required during official ceremonies and events. Students are responsible for obtaining uniforms when necessary.
Admission is based on the SAY score from the Student Selection Exam. The application requirements for the department are detailed in the ÖSYM handbook. Upon completion of a 1 (one)-year English Preparatory Program and a 4-year undergraduate program, graduates will be awarded a bachelor’s degree. The curriculum of the Department of Marine Engineering at Yildiz Technical University complies with the A-III/1 and A-III/2 syllabi of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) STCW Convention. Those wishing to work on ships after completing this program must also pass the exams administered by the Seafarers’ Examination Center (GASM), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Candidates who pass these exams are awarded the title of “Ocean-Going Watch Engineer.” After 36 months or more of sea service as an “Ocean-Going Watch Engineer,” they may retake the exams to earn the title of “Ocean-Going Second Engineer.” After 36 months or more of sea service as a “Second Engineer on Ocean-Going Vessels,” they may take the exams again to earn the title of “Chief Engineer on Ocean-Going Vessels.” Following their sea experience, they can take on roles such as machinery inspector, personnel manager, technical manager, and outfitting engineer at shipyards in companies engaged in maritime activities.
