The Department of Marine Engineering was established in 2008 and began operations within the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Maritime Sciences in the 2009–2010 academic year with 50 students. The purpose of the Marine Engineering Operations program launched at Yildiz Technical University is to train qualified Marine Engineering Operations Engineers to meet the needs of both Turkey’s and the world’s merchant fleets.
Students are also offered the opportunity to pursue a double major with other undergraduate programs at our university. Provided that the course content and credit value are appropriate, students may also take courses from different departments. At least 30% of the courses are taught in English. A key feature of the Marine Engineering Operations Program is that a significant portion of the education is practice-oriented.
Educational activities are conducted at Yildiz Technical University’s main (Yildiz) campus in Beşiktaş, Istanbul. While uniforms are not mandatory for daily classes in our department, wearing a uniform appropriate to maritime customs and traditions is required during official ceremonies and events. Students are responsible for obtaining uniforms when necessary.
Admission is based on the SAY score from the Student Selection Exam. The application requirements for the department are detailed in the ÖSYM handbook. Graduates will be awarded a bachelor’s degree following one year of English preparatory studies and four years of undergraduate education.
The curriculum of the Department of Marine Engineering at Yildiz Technical University complies with the A-III/1 and A-III/2 syllabi of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) STCW Convention.
